David Burns Golf Coaching

David Burns runs his advanced golf tuition business from the state-of-the art Kingsfield Golf Centre, operated by the Arkley family just off the M9 at Linlithgow, only 20 minutes from the west of the city of Edinburgh.

David, now in his early 40's, is a qualified Master Teaching Professional having previously enjoyed a highly successful amateur career. Illness, however, cut short his playing ambitions and he turned to the teaching side of the game which so fascinates him.

"As I loved the game so much, to move into teaching seemed the obvious move. To see a ten year old, for example, come to me with no idea how to grip the club or how to stand to the ball, and after ten minutes looking like a real golfer is a terrific feeling. Adults are also so enthusiastic when they can see the improvement in their games. It is wonderful to see someone suddenly hit a ball like they never thought was possible and to see their face light up. It is hugely satisfying to help someone who has sliced the ball all their life to progress to be hitting soft draw shots with the driver and long irons. I enjoy so much helping my students attain goals they never thought possible. A number of my pupils who had never broken 90 before are now regularly scoring in the 70s and are telling me of the huge thrill this has given them."

How Your Game Will Improve: There is a current trend in golf tuition circles where people are taught "a system" or a "set method". David does not believe in relying on this and when you attend first time he will analyse your swing using the latest in video technology. The analysis will be discussed fully with you and an improvement plan tailored to your needs set out.

David says:

"My belief is that there is no single system or particular way to swing. No two people are alike in build and flexibility so to teach "a system" which suits the Tiger Woods of this world to a man in his fifties who can hardly touch his knees would be ludicrous. I have been long enough at this game to see what an individual is capable of and that's where I start. I look at each student as an individual. I try not to change what they do naturally; I just try to improve on it.

My Improvement as a teacher over the years has been in distilling the mechanics of the swing into smaller pieces of information that all players will understand to enable them to reach their potential to play their best golf.”

If, of course, you are a complete beginner you will “learn by doing" - right from clear explanations of the basics of grip, stance and club movement.

"Beginners come to me and often they are quite nervous because they've had a wee go at the game already and know how difficult it seems. The first task is to make someone feel at ease and enable them to enjoy the experience of learning. If you enjoy the game from the start you are already half way there.”

One thing is certain - you won't get bogged down with mumbo jumbo or technical jargon and that you will be able to see right from the outset what you are doing and how it can be improved.

All types of golfer are catered for: David has built up an enviable reputation of being able to put over his ideas and demonstrate them in a simple and impressive way. His coaching is ideal for all ages from the very youngest of players to those who are no longer in the first flush of youth - maybe those who have retired and just want to be able to hit the ball a bit better or more consistently. David has also successfully coached youngsters with both hearing and learning disabilities.

Of course, when you build a reputation like David has, the word gets round that he is able to polish existing skills and to really improve the already accomplished player. Many scratch and plus handicap players are benefiting from David’s insight and advanced coaching techniques. These include physiological and biomechanics awareness, fitness guidance and direction.
